Unconventional artwork: Meet the man behind the mysterious sand art appearing on British beaches

Meet the man behind the sand art appearing on British beaches

Heard about alien crop circles? Well, take a look at these crop-circle-inspired art works on the beach.

Mysterious sand murals have been appearing on beaches in South England and we want to know why.

Crop circles are geometric shapes formed by flattening crops which began appearing in late 1970s in Southern England. Because of how complex and intricate the designs were, they were attributed to aliens/extraterrestials, though in 1991, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley confessed to having created over 200 crop circles in South England.

In the same fashion, people have been discovering beautiful and intricate sand art designs along the shores of Welsh Pembrokeshire coasts of Britain. However, this time we don't have to wonder for long. The mysterious artist behind the sandy art pieces does not have to remain a mystery for as long as the crop circle artists did.. The designs were created by a local sand muralist Marc Treanor.

How does he do it?

Treanor makes these intricate murals by raking patterns in the wet sand. The artist says that there are three steps in bringing his work to life.

First, he creates the pattern on paper at home. Then, he moves down to the beach to rake the design onto the sand to create his mural.

Stage three is the sad part: Treanor, his team, and sometimes, strangers, go to a vantage point to watch as his hard work and art disappear as the tide rises and the art is washed away by the ocean.

In an interview with CNN, Treanor says: "It's completely part of it, it's totally integral to the work and the fact it is impermanent and it is temporary."

Sometimes, he gets to capture his art with a camera, but sometimes, the tide comes in too quickly. Treanor says that he loves doing the murals because it becomes a bonding exercise with strangers.
