Lecturers and SUG members raise money to support needy students

The ASUU members in the university also promise to deduct N100 from their basic salary to help students who can't pay school fees.

Lecturers in Bayero University, Kano and Student Union Government members are reportedly raising money to support needy students.

According to reports, the University Student Union Government had earlier announced that it has set up the SUG Trust Fund to help less privileged students pay school and hostel fees.

In order to raise the fund, a sum of N300 was added to registration fees out of which N200 would be remitted to the fund and N100 to SUG purse, Daily Trust reports.

Lecturers promise to give students financial support

Also, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), BUK chapter, has promised to deduct N100 from the basic salary of its members to support the students.

The SUG president, Khalid Sanusi said, “We initiated the idea to help the less privileged students in the university, and it successfully started working  in the 2018/2019 academic session and there must be a certain scrutiny before releasing money to a student.”

He explained that ''a student would first write a request letter to the Dean Students Affairs of the university, then the level coordinator and all the presidents of associations of each department must be involved in making sure that the student really deserved to be supported financially''.

Sanusi added that the student union leaders are waiting for the university management to set up a committee that would control the fund as it is not with the SUG.
