Former VC wants randy lecturers sacked and jailed

The former DELSU VC who was abducted two times said sex for grade has lowered the standard of education in Nigeria.

The former Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University, Prof Abednego Ekoko has criticised the increase in cases of sexual harassment by male lecturers.

Ekoko while speaking in Asaba on Monday, March 19, said the sex for grade practice between male lecturers and female students is because of low morality and indiscipline in Nigeria.

The former VC added that the practice in many Nigerian universities has not only lowered academic standards but also reduced the value and honour of the girl-child.

Ekoko, who was kidnapped in the year 2000 and 2013,  urged the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) to enact stringent laws and policies to check sexual harassment and plagiarism in tertiary institutions.

A day after, Monday, January 8, 2018, another victim of sexual harassment, Aigbeme Okonkwo, who graduated from the University of Lagos, UNILAG, accused Professor Loius Egwari of sexually harassment when she was a student in 2006.

Students suggest punishments for randy lecturers

Reacting to the sex scandals involving the two lecturers, some female students, who spoke to Pulse suggested punishments for randy lecturers.

All the students agreed that no randy should go scot-free. While suggested immediate dismissal for lecturers caught in a sexual scandal with students, others recommended a jail term for such lecturers.

Similarly, the constitution agrees with the students' and Prof Abednego Ekoko's punishment for randy lecturers.

Section 8 of the Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Educational Institutions Prohibition Act, 2016 states that sexual harassment of a student is an offence and liable up to five years imprisonment but not less than two years with no option or fine.
