Jay Jay Okocha: Bolton fans say Nigerian legend is the best to play at their home stadium

On the 20th anniversary of their home ground, Bolton fans vote Okocha as the best to play at the Reebok/Macron Stadium.

Nigerian legend Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha has been voted by Bolton Wanderers fans as the best player to ever play at their home ground, the Reebok/Macron Stadium.

Bolton Wanderers fans watched Okocha play at the Reebok/Macron Stadium for the four years he spent at the club between 2002 and 2006.

On the 20th anniversary of the stadium, Bolton Wanderers asked fans to vote for the best ever player at the stadium.

 

The stadium which was built in 1997 was known as the Reebok Stadium until 2014 when it was renamed Macron Stadium following Bolton Wanderers’ initial four-year naming rights with Macron sportswear company.

Majority of Bolton fans voted Okocha who beat Kevin Davies and Youri Djorkaeff to emerge winner of the poll. Jussi Jaaskelainen and Iván Campo came fourth and fifth respectively.

In his four years at Bolton, Okocha played 143 games for the English club and scored 14 goals.

The 44-year-old was mesmerising at times during his time with the Whites. He led them to the final of the 2004 Carling Cup which they lost to Middlesbrough.

He scored two memorable free-kicks in the semi-final first leg against Aston Villa.

His screamer in the 1-0 win over fellow relegation battlers West Ham in 2003 is also one of his most memorable goals with the club.

It was a very vital goal which gave Bolton all the three points to save them from the drop.
