Withdrawal Of Forgery Case Against Saraki, Others: Kwara Governor, APC Spokesperson Hail FG

Saraki-EkweremaduThe Federal Government’s decision to drop two-count forgery charge it initiated against the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu and two former senior bureaucrats of the National Assembly, has been hailed by Governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed and Deputy National Publicity Secretary of All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Timi Frank.

The FG said on Friday it took the decision considering that the subject matter is already pending before Justice Gabriel Kolawole of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court.

Aside Saraki and Ekweremadu, government prosecutor, Mr. Aliyu Umar, SAN, also applied to terminate further proceeding on the forgery charge against Alhaji Salisu Abubakar Maikasuwa, former Clerk of the National Assembly and his deputy, Mr. Benedict Efeturi.

Mr. Umar, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, also said the action was a mark of the Federal Government’s respect for the rule of law.

Reacting to the development, Gov. Ahmed, who succeeded Saraki as governor of Kwara in 2011, said it was “proper, necessary and timely”.

On his part, Mr. Frank commended President Muhammadu Buhari for “choosing to act in national interest” instead of allowing political vendetta in the alleged forgery case.

Ahmed, in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Abdulwahab Oba, said “the withdrawal provides a vista of opportunity for national cohesion and a platform for synergy between the executive and the legislative arms of government”.

Speaking in the same vein, the APC deputy spokesman, said the Senate leadership seems to have been distracted as a result of the “politically motivated case by some interests that were not comfortable” with the emergence of Messrs. Saraki and Ekweremadu as Senate leaders.

He, however, went ahead to advise the federal government to “go ahead and fully withdraw even the case against the Senate President ongoing at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT)”.

Mr. Frank also urged the APC to use the opportunity provided by the withdrawal “to settle all the differences and come out again as a strong and united governing party in the interest of Nigerians and the nation”.
