FJSC Recommends Walter Onnoghen As New CJN

justice-walter-samuel-nkanu-onnoghenJustice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen has been recommended to the National Judicial Commission (NJC) as Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

The Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) recommended Onnoghen to the NJC, which will further recommend him to President Muhammadu Buhari for the position.

The appointment of Onnoghen as the new CJN according to Section 231 of the Constitution, will be done by President Buhari on the recommendation of the NJC subject to confirmation by the Senate.

Mr. Onnoghen will succeed outgoing CJN Justice Mahmud Mohammed, whose tenure ends November 10, following his attainment of the mandatory retirement age of 70 years for justices of the apex court.

Onnoghen, a native of Biase LGA of Cross River State, was born on December 22, 1950.

He has been a Justice of the Supreme Court since 2005.
