Tragedy As Gunmen Kill 4 Policemen, Set Corpses Ablaze In Edo

Panic As Gunmen Kill 7 Police Officers In Abuja

It was gathered that the policemen who were on routine security patrol were shot as they were about to alight from their Toyota Hilux patrol van on Saturday evening around 6pm.

The patrol vehicle was said to have been set ablaze with the bodies of victims inside burnt beyond recognition even as their weapons were allegedly taken away by the assailants.

It was also learnt that the gunmen later fled the scene before the arrival of a team of policemen from the Sabongida-Ora Police Division.

Narrating the incident to newsmen, a community member, who witnessed it, disclosed that one of deceased policemen managed to come out of the vehicle but died few minutes later.

The source said, “Just as they (police rescue team) arrived, the next thing they saw was smoke. It was not really possible to say exactly what happened.

“But the first people that arrived there were able to see somebody coming out from the burning vehicle. He happened to be one of the shot policemen. But he died; he came out with the last spirit of a man and fell by the side of the vehicle.

“Apparently, what people are looking at is that they (deceased cops) did not come out of the vehicle before they were shot.

“Perhaps, they (assailants) were prepared for them. The vehicle was not involved in an accident because they (victims) could have come out of it.”

Also speaking, the Chairman, Owan West Local Government Area, Mr. Frank Ilaboya, said:

“From information available to me, the policemen were about to alight from their vehicle when the assailants opened fire on them.

“They were said to have set their vehicle ablaze and took away their guns. I cannot confirm whether they were armed robbers or not.

“As I speak with you, the communities in the area are in total confusion. However, I have convened an emergency security meeting for this afternoon (Sunday) to look at the issue because there is no eyewitness that can give an account of what really happened.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Chidi Nwabuzor, said he had yet to be briefed about the incident.

“I just received the information from the media. We are yet to be briefed,” he said.
