Tech: A new kind of gene-edited pig could solve America's organ transplant problem

null

Crispr gene-edited pig organs may soon be in a hospital near you.

The latest advance in Crispr technology is a new kind of virus-free gene-edited pig.

Scientists are hot on the hunt to figure out a way to transplant pig organs into humans. But a growing concern is retroviruses in pig cells that could infect humans.

It's unclear how high, or low, the risk for retrovirus infection poses for pig-human transplants.

Regardless, a team of scientists recently reported that they've extinguished the risk all together by creating pigs that are virus-free.
