Super Woman: Wife docked for brutalizing disabled husband

A middle-aged housewife has been arraigned before an Abuja court for allegedly brutalizing her physically challenged husband.

The police in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory [FCT], has arraigned a 38-year-old housewife, Blessing Igwe, before a Gudu Upper Area Court for allegedly battering her disabled husband and sending him out of his house for several days.

Abuja Reporters gathered that Blessing, who was brought to court on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, was also alleged to have resisted arrest when the police went to invite her to the station.

According to the police prosecutor, Fidelix Ogbobe, the suspect who reside at CBN Estate at Apo, is facing a three-count charge of assault, criminal intimidation and resisting lawful arrest.

Ogbobe said ‎the complainant, Robinson Igwe of Choos Estate, Apo, reported the matter at the Apo Police Station on August 2, alleging that his wife was always taking advantage of his physical challenge to assault him all the time.

“The defendant always takes advantage of her husband’s disability to assault him. The complainant is a physically challenged person, who uses crutches to walk.

He has been admitted to a hospital because of a head injury as a result of assault and battery from his wife. Despite police intervention, the accused had repeatedly beaten her husband at the slighted provocation," Ogbobe told the court presided by Alhaji Umar Kagarko.

The prosecutor also said that the complainant had petitioned the Commissioner of Police in Abuja on the matter, adding that the defendant had also absconded with the two children produced by the union for over a year to an unknown destination.

“The defendant only reappeared on August 1, after more than a year since she left her matrimonial home and sent the complainant out of his house for days.

When the complainant reported the matter to the police, the defendant resisted arrest on three different occasions until she was finally arrested on the fourth attempt by the police,’’ Ogbobe added.‎

He also alleged that Blessing had also threatened to kill the complainant on several occasions. The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravened Sections 265, 397 and 172 of the Penal Code.

When the charges were read to her, Blessing pleaded not guilty and Alhaji Kagarko granted her bail in the sum of N20, 000 with one surety in like sum, while the case was adjourned the case until October 17, for a mention.
