Sports: Derek Jeter wants to be the next George Steinbrenner as owner of the Miami Marlins

Derek Jeter spent a lot of time learning from "The Boss."

Derek Jeter wants to call the shots.

In a 2014 interview with Jack Curry of the Yes Network, Jeter called owning a team "the next ultimate goal," and that he wanted to be the guy "that calls the shots."

Specifically, Jeter said he would like to be an owner like the late George Steinbrenner, whom Jeter played under for 16 seasons.

"I learned a lot from [Steinbrenner] on how to run an organization," said Jeter. "I would like [to be like Steinbrenner]. I thought he, in my opinion, I'm a little biased obviously, but I feel he was the best owner in all of sports."

If reports are correct, "The Captain" is going to get his shot to show off what he learned from "The Boss," who was always a domineering presence in the Yankees organization.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, New York businessman Bruce Sherman will be the "control person," but that Jeter will be left to run both the business and baseball sides of the organization.

"Sherman, a wealthy venture capitalist who has a home in New York and is building a home in South Florida, will be the 'control person,' similar to a managing general partner," Jackson wrote. "But Jeter, the former New York Yankees star shortstop, will run the business and baseball sides of the organization, the source said... [Jeter] has a great relationship with Sherman, who will allow Jeter to essentially run the organization."

Jeter, who made $266 million in salaries on the field, is believed to be contributing $25 million to the purchase of the Marlins.
