Kogi Assembly Elects New Speaker As Imam Resigns

The Kogi state house of Assembly has elected Mathew Kolawole, member representing Kaba/Bunu state constituency as the new speaker to replace Umar Ahmed Imam who resigned Wednesday night.

The replacement was announced at a special plenary held on Thursday, August 3, 2017.

The Clark of the Assembly read Imam’s resignation letter to lawmakers.

The Kogi lawmakers had on Wednesday postponed sitting till further notice after a crisis erupted on Tuesday over an alleged plan to remove the majority leader of the House, Kolawole.

They, however, resumed sitting today and after Imam’s resignation letter was read to them, elected Kolawole, as the Speaker.

Also in the new shake-up in the Kogi State House of Assembly, Bello Hassan Balogun APC Ajaokuta is now the new Majority Leader while Victor Omofaye -APC Ijumu was elected Chief Whip.

In his acceptance speech, Kolawole promised to carry all aggrieved member along by delivering good legislation and people driven government.

The new Speaker was formerly the House Majority Leader and a staunch supporter of Governor Yahaya Bello.

At the plenary, there was heavy presence of armed security men comprising the Nigeria Police, Civil Defence who conducted a stop and search before observers could gain access to the Assembly complex to feel their eyes on the day’s business.
