The video of an Indian woman being beaten with hockey sticks by her brothers-in-law because she gave birth to a baby girl has gone viral.

A video showing an Indian woman being beaten mercilessly by her husband's family members over dowry and giving birth to a baby girl has gone viral and is causing serious anger in the Asian country.

Hindustan Times reports that the incident happened in the Indian city of Patiala where the woman is seen being beaten with hockey sticks by members of her family.

According to local reports, the incident took place on July 14, 2017, and saw the 35-year-old victim identified as Meena Kashyap, allegedly being beaten by her brother-in-law and his friends over a dowry demand and allegedly for giving birth to a girl.

Shortly after footage of the video went viral, the police reportedly stormed the city and arrested the two men who beat the woman.

According to reports, the victim gave birth to a girl whom her husband's family refused to accept and a number of beatings followed.

The pair were also involved in a dispute over 700,000 rupees (£8,300) that was given by the bride's parents to her new husband's family at their wedding.

A dowry was traditionally given to a bride going to live with her new husband as a means of supporting herself with her new family and in lieu of regular inheritance.

Hindustan Times reports that in the modern era, the system is mainly used as a means of income for the husband's family, with additional demands being made even after a wedding, and often around the birth of a child.

When questioned, the victim's father said:

“We had complained about the dowry issue last year itself but nothing was done. They have been married for the past two years now and have a girl child.”

It was gathered that the victim said she met with the Punjab director general of police regarding alleged police inaction over her family’s initial complaint about her dowry.

She alleged that her brother-in-law, Kamaljeet Singh, attacked her with hockey sticks after her husband’s family came to know about the complaint in which she accused them of harassing her family for payment of the dowry.
